TZE History
Tau Zeta Epsilon (TZE), Wellesley College's Art and Music Society, was founded in 1889 to provide an opportunity for additional study of the arts and promote good fellowship among students.
In 1890 the Society became a more permanent on-campus organization and adopted both a name, Tau Zeta Epsilon, and a crest, the winged wheel.
The current TZE house was built in 1929 to replace the original house, which was located in the area where the Science Center meadow is today. the house is a Tudor revival cottage and sits at the end of Tupelo Lane by Lake Waban. TZE continues to educate the Wellesley College community about the arts through four lectures a semester featuring scholars, artists, and musicians and their areas of expertise.
TZE is proud to have Wellesley College President Diana Chapman Walsh and Mayling Soong (Madam Chiang Kai-Shek) among its alumnae.
The best way to learn about membership is to attend teas and events to get to know the club, especially if you are thinking about tea-ing. As members, we hold one or two positions, for which one runs in an election. We have weekly Sunday meetings that last about an hour. In addition to our own arts and music lectures, we support the Davis Museum and Cultural Center on campus by publicizing and attending their events. TZE as an organization cares a lot about the community and tries in every way possible to aid youth interested in arts and music programs. We have philanthropic events that are open to the public (for the past two years we have held Battle of the Bands events in our house, among many others) to raise money for charities. We are also a very social club and have mixers with other groups in the Boston area, mostly at Harvard and MIT. The club has a fabulous sense of sisterhood and its a great way to meet new people and make friends.
