Teaing History

TZE's initiation process is known as "teaing". In the 1890's TZE members would entertain prospective members by serving tea, a tradition which continues today. This terminology of "teaing" is also used within the other societies on campus (Zeta Alpha, Phi Sigma, and the Shakespeare Society).

The teas give interested students the opportunity to meet members of each society, to learn the dynamics and purposes of the clubs, and to discover whether they want to be a part of the organization.

TZE members are diverse not only in their talents, but also in their interests, backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. Therefore, we look for people who will exert themselves and enhance TZE's multidimensionality.

TZE seeks members who are genuinely interested in and appreciative of the arts and music, whether it be through personal interest, extracurricular activity, or academic focus.

We encourage each prospective member to explore the other societies on campus to be sure TZE is the society for her.

Teaing Process

Those who decide to proceed with the application process must attend three of four teas.

Prospective members must also be at Wellesley for at least one semester. First-year students may not apply for membership their first semester but we do encourage them to come to the teas, lectures and social events.

As an Accepted Member

Initiates have several duties which they must fulfill over the course of their acceptance semester as well as the following semester until new initiates arrive.

They must advertise on and off-campus for lectures and social events that TZE sponsors and they must make sure the house is cleaned after lectures and social events.

They must plan and deliver a lecture, Living Portrait, that explores some facet of arts and music.

The semester following their acceptance semester, initiates must hold at least one position within the club.
